Ah! My Goddess begins with the main character, Keiichi Morisato searching rapidly through the phone book for a place to order food. By mistake, he dials the “Goddess Help Line”, and out of nowhere the beautiful goddess Belldandy appears and tell Keiichi she will grant him one wish. Though startled, Keiichi began to think that the whole thing was an elaborate prank set up by his buddies and he hastily “wishes” to have Belldandy with him his entire life. And just like that, Keiichi’s fate is forever bound with that of Belldandy’s. Almost immediately afterwards, Keiichi is kicked out of his dorm for having a girl with him, and he finds himself living alone with Belldandy in an old abandoned temple! Things just get crazier form there, and Keiichi’s plight is an exciting, romantic, and funny one.
There is very little not to like about Ah! My Goddess. It is a rare anime that anyone can enjoy.
To start with, the animation in Ah! My Goddess is nothing short of incredible; all the visuals are topnotch. The characters themselves are wonderfully designed and beautifully drawn as well.
Aside from looking great, the characters in Ah! My Goddess are very likeable and are fantastically characterized. Keiichi is quite the cool dude, and Belldandy is truly every man’s greatest dream. However, it is Belldandy’s sisters that really steal the show.
Urd is Belldandy’s older sister, and she is constantly devising ways to help Keiichi score with her sister. Urd has helpful intentions, but sometimes she ends up doing more harm than good! The other sister is Skuld, the youngest of the three. Skuld is quite the opposite of Urd, she is very protective and doesn’t want Belldandy to have anything to do with Keiichi.
The series follows Keiichi and Belldandy’s developing relationship. It is hilarious to watch Keiichi, because every time things start going really good for him, something caused by his terrible luck or his complete lack of smoothness happens and messes him up. What is so great about Oh My Goddess is that the viewer fells just as bad a Keiichi! With Oh My Goddess you really feel with Keiichi – you feel exhilarated when puts a good move on, but you’ll desperately want things to turn around when Keiichi is not doing so well. The series really sucks the viewer in.
I cannot really find something worthy of a complaint in Oh My Goddess. It is an incredible series that every anime fan should watch. It is not earth-shatteringly groundbreaking, but it is something everyone can enjoy, and a very refreshing spin on the “one-guy-surrounded-by tons-of-girls” scenario. Only all-out, complete and total action lovers should think twice about watching Ah! My Goddess. It is an excellent anime that should be enjoyed by all.
